Bhai Kanhaiya Ji Abbotsford Foundation has been supporting Abbotsford and the surrounding communities for the past several years. The organization was started with the goal of 'Seva'. Seva is the Punjabi word for "selfless service", work or service performed without any thought of reward or personal benefit. In the Punjabi language, the person performing such service is called a Sevadar.
The Bhai Kanhaiya Ji Abbotsford Foundation idealizes the Seva performed by Bhai Kanhaiya. Bhai Kanhaiya Singh was a saintly Sikh during the late 17th and early 18th centuries who established a Dharmsal, a place of rest and care for travelers and those in need of spiritual solace. He was known for service to all regardless of social status or religion. During the Afghan-Sikh Wars, Bhai Kanhaiya was often seen carrying a mashak (a goatskin water pouch), serving water to anyone who was thirsty, quenching the thirst of the dying, and wounded soldiers. Bhai Kanhaiya also dressed wounds of those injured in battle. He did this seva with love and affection without any discrimination, giving water and tending to both friends and foe. When asked why he was serving the enemy, Bhai Kanhaiya replied "I saw no Mughal or Sikh on the battlefield. I only saw human beings".
Similarly, Bhai Kanhaiya Ji Abbotsford Foundation provides support to all, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, skin colour or socioeconomic standing. We thrive to serve selflessly, treat all equally, to carry our seva and to show respect, compassion, humility and love to all living things.
